Brooklyn Nine-Nine spoilers ahead.

Melissa Fumero has opened up about Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago's baby storyline in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

As fans of the show will know, Jake and Amy eventually welcomed a baby boy into the world during season 7's final episode, after difficulty conceiving.

Taking part in a Q&A on the comedy series' official Twitter recently, Melissa revealed that this particular storyline started "percolating early season 6", when co-creator Dan Goor sent her a text message one day.

Apparently, Goor's message went something along the lines of: 'Don't think about it too hard, just answer quickly: Do you think Amy wants to have kids? Yes or no'.

"I wrote 'Yes! I think she wants to have it all'," Melissa said.

"She wants to be captain, I think she wants to have kids and have the whole thing, and then I said: 'But, I don't think it should come easily to her because she's so this type-A, always trying to control everything type of character, and this is the one thing that she can't study for, and the one thing that she really can't control'.

"I always think that it's interesting to put her in those circumstances to see her, you know, uncomfortable. It also is when I think she is the funniest sometimes."

Melissa also opened up about Jake and Amy's fertility struggles, and said that her empathy for friends who were going through similar experiences helped her to understand and "tap in" to those emotions during the storyline.

"This is the hardest thing for this character to go through, because there's nothing she can do to fix it, except keep trying," she added.

"I was really proud of us, because we really wanted to get it right. We cared a lot about telling that story and being sensitive."

Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs on NBC in the US, while E4 and Netflix show it in the UK.
