Bruce Springsteen releases Donald Trump protest song ‘That’s What Makes Us Great’

Bruce Springsteen has certainly been vocal in his opposition to Donald Trump in the past – but now he’s laid those vocals down on a new track.

The 67-year-old rocker has teamed up with Pittsburgh musician Joe Grushecky to release a new anti-Trump protest song, titled ‘That’s What Makes Us Great.’

The track alludes to the US President and his administration through its sharply-worded lyrics: “Don’t tell me a lie / And sell it as a fact / I’ve been down that road before / And I ain’t goin’ back.

“And don’t you brag to me / That you never read a book / I never put my faith / In a con man and his crooks.”

Springsteen’s longtime collaborator, Grushecky, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he wrote the song in January – which happened to be the same month as Trump’s inauguration ceremony. We wonder where he got his inspiration from?

“I had this song, and Bruce and I had been talking. I sent it to him and he liked it. I said, ‘What do you think about singing on it?’ He gave it the Bruce treatment,” he said.

The musician, who fronted the Iron City Houserockers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, added that Trump “lost [him] the moment he started making fun of special needs people.”

Referencing the Republican’s infamous speech, for which he was accused of mocking a disabled reporter, he added: “How could a person like that be president of the United States?”

Elsewhere, Springsteen – popularly known as ‘The Boss’ – became one of the most prolific stars to speak out against Trump during the 2016 presidential election.

Back in September, during an interview with Rolling Stone, the rock legend labelled Trump a “moron” while making his case for Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

“The whole thing is tragic. Without overstating it, it’s a tragedy for our democracy,” he said.

“When you start talking about elections being rigged, you’re pushing people beyond democratic governance. And it’s a very, very dangerous thing to do. Once you let those genies out of the bottle, they don’t go back in so easy, if they go back in at all.

“The ideas he’s moving to the mainstream are all very dangerous ideas – white nationalism and the alt-right movement. The outrageous things that he’s done – not immediately disavowing David Duke?

“These are things that are obviously beyond the pale for any previous political candidate. It would sink your candidacy immediately.”
