Bruno Guimaraes' Newcastle United exit fears after new Manchester City scare

Newcastle United chiefs have stayed cool over talk that Manchester City are close to activating Bruno Guimaraes' £100m release clause.

A fresh wave of social media suggestions that Bruno was City-bound erupted last night, but suggestions at the Man City end were that this wasn't the case and there was no reaction from Bruno's representatives. Newcastle's top brass are beginning to grow tired of Bruno rumours with Paris St-Germain and Man City constantly linked with their prize asset. But they accept that the nature of Bruno's June release clause means that it will be an easy link this month.

Clubs have until what is believed to be Monday June 24, just another 11 days, to meet a £100m release clause in the contract Bruno signed last year. After that date the power will rest with Newcastle should any offers come in later in the transfer window.

For all the talk of United identifying areas in which they can reduce the wage bill and yield funds for the sake of meeting the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Bruno is definitely a player that Eddie Howe is eager to hold on to. The 26-year-old Rio de Janeiro-born star has also made claims that he is looking forward to next season with the Magpies despite missing out on European football.

Howe said at the end of the season: "We want to build our team around him. He’s an integral part of what we’re doing. His form has been very good. He seems very happy and settled here. He’s a big part of where we can hopefully take the team. But we’re not in control of that so we shall see."

Speaking on April 2, after the 4-3 win over West Ham, Bruno had said: "I don't want to look too long-term. I think game by game is the right way to think about it. Then let's see what we can achieve at the end of the season. Europe is what we want so let's see how we can go."
