Roads in Glasgow are to close for filming of a 19th century period drama set in New York City.

The crew for Apple series The Buccaneers will return to the city between Sunday, June 30, and Monday, July 1, filming a second series of the show which follows a group of 'fun-loving' American girls who make their way into London's high society. Set in the 1870s, the program explores a battle of culture alongside clashing traditional and modern values.

Glasgow Live previously reported in 2022, how the costume drama - also known as Debutante - had chosen Glasgow and Edinburgh for filming locations, spending 10 days shooting scenes around the city.

The Buccaneers 2 is being produced by The Forge Entertainment, a UK-based drama production company set up by George Faber, who has worked on major TV programmes including Channel 4 hits Skins and Shameless.

The Forge has produced shows such as Roadkill starring Hugh Laurie on the BBC, National Treasure with Robbie Coltrane and Julie Walters, which aired on Channel 4, as well as Ackley Bridge, also for Channel 4, a comedy-drama set in a Yorkshire school.

The Buccaneers was inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel of the same name.

A description for the show reads: "Girls with money, men with power. New money, old secrets. A group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning.."

Speaking about the second series of the show series creator Katherine Jakeways, said: "“t’s been a complete thrill to watch people all over the world fall in love with these characters, who’ve been brought to such vibrant life by our spectacular cast

"We know season one left audiences desperate to know what’s next for our buccaneers, so I’m absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to explore the further adventures of this smart, joyful, messy sisterhood.”

Road closures will apply to all vehicles except emergency services and those given permission by the council’s filming and events section.

The restrictions start at 6am on Sunday, June 30 and will last until 11.50 pm on Monday, July 1.

Debutante 2 road closures:

  • Stag Street for its full length

  • Clydebrae Street for its full length

  • Govan Road, bus lane only, between Napier Street and Stag Street
