Burglar jailed after making cup of tea and falling asleep during theatre break-in

A burglar has been jailed after breaking into a theatre, where he made himself a cup of tea then fell asleep.

Adrian Edwards, 46, snuck into the Central Theatre in Chatham, Kent at around 6am on 16 April this year.

He seized a laptop, a drill and a pair of trainers before making himself the beverage then lying down and falling asleep.

Edwards was then woken up later by a worker who had arrived at the theatre for the start of a shift.

He then quickly fled the building with the stolen goods.

After the break-in, police investigators did a forensic examination of blood found near a window as well as open cans of drinks and cigarettes that Edwards had discarded - all of which matched his DNA.

Officers also discovered some medication at the scene in his name.

Police patrols examined CCTV and Edwards was arrested later the same day.

When he was searched, officers found he had a psychoactive substance.

At Maidstone Crown Court on Thursday, Edwards was jailed for one year and four months after pleading guilty to the burglary.

He also admitted one charge of possessing class B drugs.

Karendeep Khaira, a CID investigator for Kent Police, said Edwards thought he had time to make a cup of tea but instead left a trail of evidence for cops.

She added: "This was a brazen burglary that was undermined when Edwards carelessly fell asleep at the scene.

"He had thought he had time to make himself a cup of tea while stealing other people’s property but only succeeded in leaving a trail of evidence that allowed our officers to swiftly detain him and bring him to justice.

“I hope his sentence acts as a deterrent to others."
