Businesswoman braves Vietnam’s terrain in landmine eradication effort

An Ilfracombe businesswoman has joined forces with 40 others from across the UK wholesale sector for the Vietnam Cycle Challenge.

Kelly Williams left North Devon on Friday, to head to Vietnam where she is currently cycling 400km in five days, nine hours a day, tackling steep hills, dirt tracks and all in searing temperatures.

Kelly, a director of Savona Foodservice, is not a cyclist but wanted to help the 19 people who are killed or injured by landmines or unexploded bombs around the world daily. Half of the civilian casualties are children.

Communities are living with the daily threat from these indiscriminate killers, unable to farm, attend school or play outside without fear. Fundraising will help the charity, Mines Advisory G roup, to find, remove and destroy even more of these deadly items from places affected by conflict.

Training has been long and painful, but Kelly is motivated and ready to take on the challenge of a lifetime.
She said: “It is a privilege to be able to join colleagues from the wholesale and retail industry to raise awareness and vital funds to support the amazing work being done by MAG.

“I am not a cyclist so this is an extreme challenge for me and has involved training for 6 months to prepare by body for cycling 440km over 5 days in intense heat, over gruelling terrain.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are saving many lives as a result.”
