Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox lead celebrity disdain for Trump's 'transgender ban'

Yesterday President Donald Trump announced that he is reinstating a ban on transgender people serving in the US armed forces.

The controversial politician tweeted: “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

The announcement was met with a huge amount of backlash, and transgender stars Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox led the celebrity disdain for Trump’s decision.

Caitlyn, who voted for Trump in the November election, tweeted: “There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them?”

She followed up with a link to her “full response” to the news, writing: “America’s 15,000 trans service members and 134,000 veterans are much braver than you, Mr. Trump; my allegiance is with them and our country, not you.”

Orange Is The New Black star Laverne also took to social media to share her view on Trump’s ruling, stating: “I have met many transgender Americans over the years who have served or are currently serving our country in the military.

“I have heard from them humiliating stories of being misgendered and experiencing various kinds of mistreatment when they are willing to put their lives on the line in ways many of us would never do including our current President.

“This latest reversal of another Obama administration policy continues to send the message to trans Americans that our lives, our safety and service are less valuable and unwanted in this country, the country I love and hold so dear.”

Kim Kardashian also spoke up.

The two women were not alone in their opinion, with an abundance of other stars taking to Twitter and Instagram to publicly show their support to the transgender community, with many sharing the hashtag ‘#TransRightAreHumanRights’, which was quickly one of the top trends on Twitter yesterday.

Caitlyn’s step-daughter, Kim Kardashian, wrote: “Banning transgender people from serving our country is simply wrong. We should be so grateful to anybody who wants to serve!”

James Corden retweeted an LGBT-friendly message from Ivanka Trump and added: “Hey Ivanka, James here.

“Hope all is good, quick question, can you… Erm… Call your dad and have a talk?”

Demi Lovato wrote: “I just want to tell the transgender community that I love you and you ARE supported no matter what. #ProtectTransTroops”.

And British YouTuber Alfie Deyes added: “Sending so much love to my transgender following! The world appreciates you for being you”.

President Trump has not yet responded to the backlash that his ruling has faced.
