In pictures: Calais ‘Jungle’ exodus begins after weekend of violence

The mass exodus of migrants from the Calais “Jungle” camp has begun.

About 7,000 people have been housed in the French camp in squalid conditions.

More than 1,200 police and officials have started the process of clearing out the camp before its demolition on Tuesday.

Migrants queued peacefully for the first of about 60 coaches that will transport them to refugee centres across France.

The atmosphere on Monday morning was in stark contrast to the violent clashes between some camp residents and police over the weekend.

Residents threw stones at French riot police on the perimeter of the camp, who fired back with tear gas.

Migrants will be separated into groups of families, minors, vulnerable or ill people and others travelling alone, then given coloured wristbands depending on which region of France they say they would like to be sent to.

They will be given the opportunity to claim asylum. If they do not, they could face deportation.
