Call the Midwife fans have been left asking the show's creator Heidi Thomas if Trixie and Matthew are returning for the Christmas special 2024. As fans of the long running period drama will know Matthew (Olly Rix) left Poplar and travelled to New York to seek out new business opportunities after he went bankrupt.

He has also questioned Trixie's commitment to being a wife and step-mum to his son Jonty as she also dedicated herself to being a midwife. After much thought, and a lot of tears, Trixie also left East London and headed to the States to be with her family at the end of series 14.

So far there was been so official announcement if or when Trixie and Matthew will return, although actress Helen George did share a photo of herself on the Call the Midwife set in May. But when Heidi Thomas, who created and writes the show, recently joined the cast during filming fans have been 'begging' for information on Trixie and Matthew.

Heidi, who is also married to Dr Turner star Stephen McGann, visited the set as filming for the Christmas special finished. Taking to the show's official Instagram page, Heidi is pictured alongside the Turner children and joined the young stars at the breakfast table.

In the caption, Heidi said: "It was a pleasure to spend time on set with Alice, April and Ned. They manage to have lots of fun together, whilst being incredibly professional. I was also very impressed by their ability to eat bowl after bowl of soggy cornflakes without complaint!.

"Where would Sixties and Seventies Poplar children be without their authentic diet of soggy cornflakes! We're just THRILLED with how Christmas filming has gone, and can't wait to show you the results."

Call the Midwife fans rushed to the comments section and urged Heidi for an update on Matthew and Trixie. One person wrote: "I'm so excited for the Christmas special I hope Trixie comes back."

A second stated: "Love how CTM appears to be a “family” on and off screen. Great show. Let’s hope Trixie and Matthew also come back together before the whole series ends."

A third chimed in with: "Hope there is a Christmas happy ending for Trixie and Matthew xx". While another added: "Can’t wait to see the Christmas special and hope for the best for Trixie and Matthew."

Call the Midwife returns on Christmas Day.
