Call the Midwife icon Helen George appears to have confirmed her returned to the BBC drama after her character left for New York in series 13, which aired earlier this year.

The 39-year-old actress has played Nurse Trixie Franklin since the period drama launched in 2012. However, fans were left worried that Trixie wouldn't be returning to the show after confirming she was moving to the USA with her husband Matthew Aylward (Olly Rix).

However, the actress took to her Instagram Story on Wednesday (May 8) to share a selfie dressed as Trixie and tagged in the official Call the Midwife profile. In the stunning snap Helen dons her trademark blonde bobbed hair style teamed with a glam make-up look consisting of bold lipstick.

She also wore a patterned turtle neck and bright red nail vanish. On one finger she also wears a huge diamond ring which could be a telling sign that her on- screen husband Matthew is also returning.

The dramatic 13th season of Call the Midwife saw Trixie finally agree to meet her husband stateside following his bankruptcy in Poplar. Matthew had hit financial difficulty after running his late father's business into the ground and was consequently struck off.

This put immense pressure on the newly weds relationship. However, the businessman found a new opportunity to make money overseas and left Poplar with his young son Jonty leaving the midwife devastated.

After weeks of missing Matthew and Jonty Trixie took the decision to join him abroad. This left Matthew and Trixie's future on the show unknown.

But Trixie appears to be returning to the East End for the annual Christmas special. Last week, Call the Midwife confirmed they had started filming the festive instalment which will be set in 1969.

They also shared with fans that a funfair will be coming to Poplar for the joyous season before the show moves into the 1970s.

"Series 14 is set in 1970, launching us into an exciting new decade," show creator Heidi Thomas confirmed. "We can’t wait to bring you another season full of touching, exciting, emotional stories from Nonnatus House."
