Call the Midwife star Stephen McGann has revealed that he prepares for his role in the show with the help of an unusual kitchen utensil.

The actor, who plays Dr. Patrick Turner in the BBC drama, said on Monday’s edition of The One Show that he uses salad servers to practise his skills for the birth scenes.

Speaking to hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas, McGann admitted: "You know what I do for a forceps delivery? I still do it, to practise because I get nervous. I use salad servers at home.

"I use a teddy bear that my son used to have, and salad servers, and pull out the baby."

Host Jones then joked, "Oh, it could be off-putting for guests, Stephen."

"It could be terrifying!" McGann replied. "Because I get a terrible shock when the teddy bear doesn’t come out, it’s awful."

McGann appeared on the programme talking about the new series of Call the Midwife alongside Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry, who play new recruits Joyce Highland and Rosalind Clifford.

Bailey and Quarry have both previously teased emotional stories for both of their characters in the upcoming series.

During his stint on The One Show, McGann was also full of praise for comedian Rosie Jones, who appeared as a guest star in the latest episode of the show as mother-to-be Doreen.

He said: "She is a joy to work with. She was like a Call the Midwife natural. We were all gutted when she left at the end, but what a fantastic job she did. She did the most moving, amazing job. We were all in tears when she was doing it in rehearsals. Amazing."

Call the Midwife season 13 airs on Sundays at 8pm on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
