Armed Forces Day is an annual day dedicated to celebrating the men and women serving in the British Armed Forces. This year, it will be celebrated in Cambridge for the first time. A huge fair will take over one of the city's parks for a day of entertainment and celebration.

The Armed Forces Day Military Fair will be held at Parker's Piece from 11am to 5pm on Saturday, June 29. The free event is organised by the Cambridge Armed Forces, Veterans Breakfast Club and the Cambridge Veterans Club.

Alongside food vans, visitors can experience living history groups and a 1950s dance and singing troupe. There will be a military drum band performance as well to keep the entertainment going.

For the younger visitors, there will be plenty of fun and games including a laser battle zone and family fun area. There will also be a military village with regular and reserve forces, armed forces associations and support organisations. Veteran-run business stalls have been invited to the fair so visitors can support them directly.

There were plans for a monumental Lancaster Bomber- Battle of Britain memorial flyover during the fair, however, it has been cancelled. According to fair organisers, the cancellation is due to the Spitfire crash at RAF Coningsby where a Royal Air Force pilot died in May, resulting in a suspension of all flypasts.

Parking for Cambridge Armed Forces Day Fair

There isn't parking at the event but the nearby Queen Anne Terrace Car Park is the most affordable option. There is also parking at the Grand Arcade and Grafton Centre.

Buses for Cambridge Armed Forces Day Fair

There are five Park and Ride routes and they all have stops near Parker's Piece. They are at Trumpington, Milton, Newmarket Road, Babraham and Madingley. It is free to park in these car parks for up to 18 hours and a return ticket costs £3.50. Parker's Piece is a 15-minute walk from the Cambridge railway station so that is another great option.

Carl Higgs, Community Development Officer for the Armed Forces Community, Cambridge City Council, said: "The determination shown by the Armed Forces and Veteran community here in Cambridge has been outstanding.

"When the veterans approached the council with their plans for the event, we offered them the support and guidance to truly enable the Armed Forces community here in the city to celebrate Armed Forces Day with the wider community.

"The city council recognise the sacrifices these brave members of our community have made, as well as their discipline and diverse skillset, and as such are signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant currently holding a silver award and looking to progress onward. We are striving with our efforts to ensure that their service doesn’t disadvantage them on their return to the community, or employment."
