Nerves can kill you in competition. Athletes have tricks to quiet beating hearts and anxious breathing. Lindsey Vonn fidgets with her pole straps before a race. Chloe Kim blasts Lady Gaga in her earbuds. And bright and early Sunday morning, Shawn Germain, husband of Canadian curler Rachel Homan, quieted his own nerves by double-fisting beers in the rink in Pyeongchang.

One perk of watching sports instead of competing in them: It doesn't matter how much booze flows through your bloodstream.

Here's Germain rinkside around 9 a.m., Pyeongchang time:

That'll take the edge off.

Homan was competing in a high-stakes curling match against second-place Japan, and her team came out victorious, giving them a shot at the curling medal - until Monday anyway, when Team USA narrowly defeated Canada, bumping them to fifth place. (No word on how many beers Germain downed to get through that loss.)

After the match, Germain, a former pro hockey player, denied reports that he missed the end of the match because he was getting more beer. He also said on Twitter in a now-deleted tweet, "You can judge all you want. The stress level is high, I’m not a drunk, I’m just Canadian."

No judgement coming from this end, where our Olympic heroes include Teen-Who-Is-Cooler-Than-You Red Gerard, whose family shotgunned beers at 8:30 a.m. the morning of his gold-medal-winning snowboarding run. Hey, whatever calms the nerves.
