The current Doctor Who team were out in support of the show's first female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, at San Diego Comic-Con.

During the show's Hall H panel, showrunner Steven Moffat accused certain sections of the press of trying to whip up a false controversy about Whittaker's casting.

And, speaking to Digital Spy, Peter Capaldi said he doesn't understand the "controversy" surrounding his successor.

"I just think it's a brilliant idea and it propels the show forward, and how interesting, what fun!" he said.

"I sort of don't get the idea that there's any controversy over it, I just don't really get it. I just think, 'It's a new Doctor Who!' and that's really exciting. It's a new person playing Doctor Who and they'll bring their whole new thing to it and that's always exciting."

Well, quite. Doctor Who will return to BBC One and BBC America this Christmas for Capaldi's (and Moffat's) swansong, before returning with a new Doctor and a whole new team in 2018.

Along with Capaldi and Moffat, Pearl Mackie has also confirmed that she'll be exiting the show as companion Bill Potts in festive special 'Twice Upon a Time'.

The hour-long episode will see the 12th Doctor (Capaldi) meet the 1st (David Bradley), with each convincing the other to regenerate into their next incarnation.

Moffat revealed: "It's the 12th Doctor saying to Number One, 'Listen, you have to [change] or all of this stuff won't happen!' and the 1st Doctor saying, 'Well, what about you?' – they go off on a crazy adventure with Mark Gatiss and Bill Potts and decide whether or not they're going to carry on... which of course, they are!"
