Yahoo News Captain Cook says late team talk sparked Poole’s charge to victory against Edinburgh
CAPTAIN Ben Cook said a late team talk helped spark Poole Pirates into life to earn a double-digit win over Edinburgh Monarchs.
The meeting at Wimborne Road was close throughout, no club achieving a heat maximum all night, with six points the most the margin reached until the final two heats.
Race wins for Zach Cook and Richard Lawson then helped the hosts pull away to win 50-40, moving them up to second in the SGB Championship, while Edinburgh remain bottom.
“They pushed us really hard,” said Ben Cook, who had a mixed night, scoring paid eight.
“We had a bit of a team talk towards the end and we had to knuckle down and start getting some wins. We’ll take a 10-point lead, given where we were sitting through the meeting, it was a tough one.
“Personally I struggled to get something to work. I left it until late. But you have those nights and it was one of those.
“I was riding very hard for not much. I was trying a few different things, a different engine and it probably didn’t work out.
“But these things happen in speedway and we’ll move on to the next one.”
Ben’s brother Zach, who scored eight points, added: “It was good. I was making some good starts and getting a bit of a clear track. It was nice.
“The boys dug really deep. It was a bit harder than we would’ve liked, but 10 points, we’re quite happy with that.”
Lawson top scored for Poole, with 12 from five rides.
“f you would have said during the interval we’d get a 10-point lead, I would have taken that, absolutely,” said the Cumbrian.
“We went there with a nine-point lead in the KO Cup and pulled that off.
“We’ll go up there and can ride Edinburgh well and bring back that bonus point.”
