While we've been busy speculating over Jude Law's role in Captain Marvel, we've actually been sleeping on the real hero of the upcoming epic.

And we'd like to take the time to apologise for our oversight.

Fortunately for us, Captain Marvel and Nick Fury have stepped in to set the record straight, paying tribute to their "talented, refined, iconic" co-star in a recent promo video.

Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson are of course talking about Carol Danvers' closest and cutest friend, Goose the cat.

Well, what better way to celebrate your loyal alien companion than on Love Your Pet Day (which is a thing now, apparently)?

Goose's all-important role in Captain Marvel was first teased when the film's trailer dropped back in September, with a full-blown official character poster shortly following.

For those of you unfamiliar with your new favourite character's comic book backstory, Goose actually first appeared as Carol's pet cat Chewie. Carol initially thought Chewie was an average cat, as you would, but soon learned that she was actually a cat-like alien called a Flerken.

Flerkens, unlike our mini-panthers at home, have access to pocket dimensions. Chewie's favourite use of pocket dimensions? Filling them with things like Flerken eggs and tentacles.

Iconic.

Captain Marvel is released in cinemas on March 8, shortly followed by Avengers: Endgame, which hits UK cinemas on April 25 and US cinemas on April 26.
