A new car was ripped in half when the vehicle transporter it was on collided with a low bridge.

These images show how the white Seat was severely damaged in the crash.

The lorry carrying the car and a number of other vehicles hit the underside of a new pedestrian footbridge in Crawley, West Sussex, on Friday morning.

The white car was caught by the bridge and shredded down the middle.

The crash forced the Seat to hang through the middle layer of the transporter while its rear end was left behind.

Local office workers said they heard an “almighty crash” when cars on the top level collided with the bridge on Gatwick Road at 10.30am on Friday.

The 49-year-old from Swanley, Kent, said: “I was sat in the office and there was an almighty crash. Hearing the noise I just thought, ‘What the hell has gone on?’

“I went out the back to have a look and just next to the bridge there was this car transporter parked up with a car totally crushed and the roof ripped off.

“The car was hanging down in the middle of the transporter and it had obviously hit the other cars that were on there.

“If there had been another car it could have come off the back and it couldn’t have been quite tragic.

“There was lots of debris on the road – the roof, glass and bits and pieces so that slowed the traffic down. It was just gob-smacking really.”

The new pedestrian bridge hasn’t been opened to the public yet.
