Cat and dog owners warned 'keep pets inside' as much as possible 'until September'

Cat and dog owners have been told not to let their pets outside until the "evenings" over summer while pollen is high. According to a spokesperson from Pets at Home, the symptoms in pets mirror those in humans such as sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, and rashes.

Tree pollen occurs first, typically from late March to mid-May, and affects around 25 per cent of people. Most people are allergic to grass pollen (which actually has two peaks) and the season lasts from mid-May until July. Weed pollen can be released at any time but the season typically covers the end of June to September, the Met Office said.

Veterinarian Olivia Anderson-Nathan, from the charity PDSA, advises strategic timing for walks. “You can reduce symptoms by taking dogs out when pollen is low”, she said. Dog owners are told to walk pets when pollen levels are lower, such as early mornings or late evenings.

Regularly washing and vacuuming your pet's bedding to rid it of any accumulated pollen brought in from outdoor adventures will also help. Adding skin supplements or oils to your pet's diet can help support their skin health, potentially alleviating allergic reactions associated with hay fever.

Everyday Paw Insurance says remove the trigger (allergen) and keep your dog or cat indoors and out of the garden as much as possible during the summer months - especially during and after mowing the lawn.

Keep an eye on pollen forecasts and keep your dog indoors when the pollen count is high, and walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the time when the pollen counts are high (midday) and avoid walking in areas with long grass or areas with lots of weeds, they add.

Wipe your pet’s coat and feet with a damp cloth to remove any pollen, keep your garden weed-free and replace trees that have heavy pollen and wash your pet’s bedding regularly. Also vacuum regularly and remove indoor flowers and plants.

Keep the windows shut and use an air-filter system, too.
