The Maui wildfires that turned Hawaii into “hell” last year caused death and destruction in the town of Lahaina and displaced many people from their homes.

Pets were also dramatically affected by the Maui fires, with many ending up injured or without a home after getting separated from their owners in the midst of evacuations.

But six months later, one cat miraculously got a happy ending.

A three-year-old cat named Mahina had been missing ever since the devastating natural disaster destroyed her family’s home.

The cat survived in the burn zone for 100 days before being rescued by the Maui Humane Society, CBS Evening News shared in a TikTok video on Wednesday.

Mahina’s humans tried searching for her and filed a lost pet report immediately after losing her, but eventually gave up hope, assuming they’d likely never find her or that something must have happened to her.

The family moved thousands of miles away to Montana without Mahina — not knowing if they’d ever see her again.

The Maui Humane Society was able to quickly identify Mahina’s owner through her microchip, and they were “overjoyed” to discover she survived the fires, MHS shared in a Facebook post.

The Maui Humane Society covered the costs of reuniting Mahina with her family and fly her to the mainland.

“It took a village to get Mahina to her Ohana in Montana, through navigating flights and snow in the forecast. MHS covered the cost of Mahina’s health certificate and travel, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines made sure she was safe and sound in her flight, and a trusted transporter brought her from Seattle to Montana,” the post explained.

The Humane Society also shared an update they received about Mahina from her owners: “Mahina is doing soooo so good. She is a happy kitty and loves to play with her feather toy and watch TV with us. She stays strictly inside now, but since we are in Montana, she hasn’t wanted to go outside because of the snow! She’s so goofy and is so happy to be home with her parents!”

Mahina’s owner also shared a message to the rescuers with CBS Evening News.

“Thank you so much, not even just for my kitty, but for all the other animals out there that they have rescued from this fire. Just reuniting families and bringing hope. It’s a beautiful thing,” she said.
