Proceeds from the Tribute Awards go towards the festival’s TIFF Every Story Fund, which encourages diversity, equity and inclusion in filmmaking. The gala dinner fundraiser for the fest’s philanthropic efforts is also an occasional harbinger of Oscar recognition and is held each year at Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

“Cate Blanchett is a marvel. One of the finest actors in film history, she has consistently shown range, depth and audacity on screen. Offscreen, she has been a tireless champion of increased equity and justice in many sectors,” TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said in a statement on Tuesday.

The star of TárBlue JasmineCarol and Elizabeth is also a prolific producer, through her company Dirty Films (The New Boy, Miss America), and has served as a co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company.

TIFF Tribute Award honorees tend to have films in Toronto’s official lineup.

Earlier, Toronto announced that David Cronenberg will receive the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award and Oscar-nominated actor Amy Adams will receive the TIFF Tribute Performer Award. Past Tribute Awards honorees include Jessica Chastain, Roger Deakins, Colman Domingo, Brendan Fraser, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Joaquin Phoenix, Taika Waititi, Michelle Yeoh and Chloé Zhao.
