Church officials have defended the decision to allow the Hellboy reboot to shoot in Wells Cathedral.

Hellboy is a hero who overcomes his scary appearance and hellish origins to save the world on multiple occasions – but of course there were people who overlooked this in order to complain.

"For heavens's sake. Are we losing sight of what this was built for?" a local told the BBC.

"I have to say I am surprised and shocked."

Luckily, more rational heads prevailed, and after looking into the character, those in charge allowed filming despite anticipating that there was bound to be some controversy.

They rightly concluded that "the superhero's true nature was that of a defender against the forces of darkness, in an eternal battle of good against evil".

Stranger Things star David Harbour will replace Ron Perlman in the title role, with Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane and Daniel Dae Kim also starring in The Descent director Neil Marshall's film.

Kim was cast as the half-Japanese, half-American Captain Ben Daimio after the original casting of Ed Skrein attracted more justifiable controversy in the form of whitewashing accusations.

Hellboy is expected to arrive in 2018.
