The biggest celebrity feuds of 2023 including Taylor Swift's 'career death'
Taylor Swift and Britney Spears have had some of the most headline-grabbing feuds of 2023
Here are the celebrities who have been caught up in headline-grabbing feuds in 2023. It is no surprise these are some of the biggest moments talked about in the celebrity world.
We take a look back at five of the most explosive rows to play out in the celebrity world in 2023...
Cake-gate scandal
The celebrity cake row was one of the biggest feuds in the UK celebrity world this year, going viral and grabbing the attention of headlines. A baker refused to bake a celebrity's 40th birthday cake for free because she said she couldn't feed her staff's family with Instagram "likes".
Rebecca Severs, owner of Keighley's Three Little Birds Bakery, posted the exchange she had with a PR firm about a celebrity. In a bizarre video, Coronation Street actor Catherine Tyldesley hit out at the baker but she denied she was the celebrity involved in cake gate. She said in a video: "Cake gate, what! So I have no idea those emails were being sent. I'm not working with the lovely OK! Magazine on anything."
Of the PR firm, she said: "They've supplied me with performers in the past. They're insane and they've been completely misrepresented in this matter. Utterly bizarre. Don't really know what to say. I mean I hope the cake lady got the exposure she was craving."
The owner of Keighley's Three Little Birds Bakery lifted the lid on why she had turned down the unnamed celebrity's extravagant request for a 40th birthday. She told BBC Radio Leeds: "A lot of industries like mine are not valued enough for the skill and time that goes into our products. It's not just the time it takes to make a cake, it's the 20-odd years of experience and skill you've spent to get to that point. It's a real challenge to price your own worth when it's your own thing, it's really personal."
Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian
Taylor Swift reignited her famous feud with Kim Kardashian and her then husband Kayne West in an interview with TIME magazine who named her person of the year. She fell out with the famous family when West claimed he had her permission to write lyrics about her in his 2016 track Famous, which Swift has always denied. Kardashian leaked a phone call in which Swift appeared to agree to it and in turn made her look like a liar.
All these years later, Swift fuelled the flames of the fire as she addressed how the feud impacted her. In a new interview, Swift called the moment a "career death". She told TIME magazine: "Make no mistake - my career was taken away from me."
"You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar," she added. "That took me down psychologically to a place I've never been before. I moved to a foreign country. I didn't leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls."
Carol Vorderman and Johnny Mercer's wife Felicity
Carol Vorderman has been locked in a bitter row with Johnny Mercer's wife Felicity Cornelius-Mercer after she criticised her MP husband. In November, the MP's wife made her latest dig at the maths whizz. Alongside an article revealing Vorderman had left BBC over their social media guidelines, Cornelius-Mercer wrote: "Binned by the BBC."
Earlier this year, Cornelius-Mercer compared Vorderman to a "celebrity dog attack" in the Difficult Women podcast hosted by Rachel Johnson. The MP's wife said: "It’s this idea of these celebrity attack dogs that know nothing about politics...You can’t blanket hate. This is what Vorderman seems to be doing."
They initially clashed in July over MP Mercer's suggestion that former military staff using foodbanks was a lifestyle choice. He said: "These are personal decisions around how people are budgeting every month. I don’t want to see anyone using food banks, of course I don’t. But we’re in an extremely difficult time, around the cost of living."
His words sparked outrage from Vorderman - who doesn't shy away from controversy. She hit back on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: "Johnny Mercer thinks food bank use is "a personal decision" He's wrong. I grew up in poverty, mum had 5 jobs, nearly killed her. It was NOT a choice."
Britney Spears and family feud
Sadly Britney Spears has been feuding with her family after she fought for her freedom from the conservatorship. The pop star was placed under a conservatorship which saw her life controlled by her father Jamie and others in 2007.
Spears gave an insight to the family feud in her 2023 memoir The Woman In Me as she said her family had "betrayed" her in an impassioned passage. When the conservatorship was suspended in November 2021, she said her sister didn't support her because she wrote a tell-all book about her.
She wrote: "I was left with so many emotions: shock, relief, elation, sadness, joy. I felt betrayed by my father, and sadly, by the rest of my family, too. My sister and I should have found comfort in each other, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case."
She added: "As I was fighting the conservatorship and receiving a lot of press attention, she was writing a book capitalising on it... She rushed out salacious stories about me, many of them hurtful and outrageous. I was really let down. Shouldn't sisters be able to confess their fear or vulnerability to each other without that later being used as evidence of instability?"
However, Spears concluded she was trying to find it within her to move on from what happened with her family. She wrote: "I'm working to feel more compassion than anger toward her and toward everyone who I feel has wronged me. It's not easy."
Her younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears made an appearance on British reality show I'm A Celebrity where she discussed their very public fallouts. She told her campmates: "Me and her throw down. The world's seen that. I've learned to stop talking about it publicly but you know what family's fight. Listen we just do it better than most." In the same breath, she declared her love for her sister saying: "She's a good big sister, she is. Yeah, I love her."
Married At First Sight's Jordan and Luke
Married At First Sight saw one of the biggest fallouts in reality TV in 2023. Luke Worley was booted off MAFS after a physical fight with Jordan Gayle. In an exclusive chat with Yahoo in November, Erica Roberts revealed how the MAFS fight had impacted her and Jordan on the series. "It was really awful," she said. "We never said they have to leave."
She added: "It was never up to us. It was the channel and the footage that happened when Luke came in that got taken to like the highest of highs of Channel 4 and it had to be them that made that decision. Obviously I do think it was the right decision and the channel were amazing. They were very supportive. They did listen to us and listen to how we felt. It was just awful."
Erica doesn't want an apology for what happened but she said Jordan and Luke plan to settle it with a boxing match. "Jordan and Luke wanna sort it out in other ways," she said. "They're planning a boxing match. They have got a venue and the press conference, they've got that sorted. So it's just about signing contracts now. They're definitely wanting to settle this the correct way."
