Both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have been warned about paying out for Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong - with Celtic facing a nervous wait for a sell-on payday.

The full-back has been a key figure in helping Xabi Alonso's side claim an historic first Bundesliga title and an unbeaten domestic campaign - which also saw the 23-year-old lift the DFD Pokal. The former Celtic defender has seen his star rise before he heads to Euro 2024 with the Netherlands - and Parkhead chiefs will be on high alert with a significant chunk of Frimpong's £34million release clause set to arrive in the Hoops' coffers should a switch from Leverkusen materialise this summer.

United had reportedly been among the frontrunners for a deal - but with owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe cutting costs at Old Trafford amid fears over Financial Fair Play (FFP) punishments Erik ten Hag has been urged to halt the recruitment drive. The Dutch boss has been told to tell Aaron Wan-Bissaka to 'f****** defend' by Dwight Yorke rather than spend big this summer.

He told Offshore Poker Sites: "If Jeremie Frimpong is a bit fragile defensively, then he'll be bought for a certain system by the manager. Nowadays, full-backs play much higher up the pitch and can play in all types of systems, but I don't know how Erik ten Hag wants to play.

"Man United already have a good right-back in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but you can say he's the opposite of Frimpong, great defensively but not that great going forward. When we attack, we should be letting Wan-Bissaka sit back and offer more defensive protection, handling the one-on-one on the wing.

"Instead, Wan-Bissaka, who doesn't score or create, run around like a headless chicken in the opposition box, running in his teammates' way. It's not rocket science, watching this unfold is crazy. The one thing you need in the defence is to be able to defend one-v-one. Just let him f****** defend."

PSG have also been touted with an approach for Frimpong by Diario AS, with Nordi Mukiele set to leave this summer while Achraf Hakimi is also said to be commanding "interest." But CBS Sports reporter and PSG insider Jonathan Johnson played down the prospect of a move on the PSG Talking podcast.

He reckons a deal would only get over the line of the Parisians agree IF they agree to a bumper sale of Achraf Hakimi: “I think Frimpong mainly would make sense if you’re sort of considering the possibility that Achraf Hakimi moves on Obviously, we know that [Kylian] Mbappe leaving will have an impact on Hakimi, given how close they are.

“I think Hakimi was much better this past season than he was the season before, but I do still think that you know if a strong offer is put forward to PSG, they probably would still consider it. I don’t see a world really where PSG sort of have two very top quality right wing backs, even if there would be cover needed in a lot of these different situations."

It leaves the Scottish Premiership champions with a nervous wait to see if a deal gets over the line. Celtic hold a 30 percent sell-on fee as part of the £11million deal that allowed Frimpong to leave the club for Leverkusen - with a sale at the star's release clause set to bank the Hoops' £6.2million.
