Cerro Porteno Soccer Fans Defy Copa Libertadores Pyrotechnic Ban With Amazing Firework Display

Cerro Porteño fans rebelled against Conmebol’s ban on pyrotechnics at soccer games with an incredible firework display during the Paraguayan club’s second leg Copa Libertadores quarter-final on August 29.

Asunción’s Estadio General Pablo Rojas was filled with smoke as fans across the stadium lit smoke bombs and fireworks in the traditional Cerro Porteño colors before the beginning of the game.

Conmebol, the South American Football Confederation, prohibits the use of pyrotechnics and flares at soccer games. Article 26 of official Conmebol regulations states that lighting flares, smoke bombs, or any other pyrotechnic object is prohibited.

The rousing display did little to help Cerro Porteño, who drew with Argentina’s River Plate 1-1. River Plate progressed to the Copa Libertadores semifinals on a 3-1 aggregate score as a result. Credit: Hernán Rodriguez via Storyful
