Arsenal and Manchester City are on the brink of making Champions League history, a record that Jose Mourinho had a hand in setting. By Wednesday night's end, the semi-final line-up will be complete, potentially with a historic twist.

Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund have already secured their spots in the semi-finals following their respective quarter-final victories. Both second legs were nail-biters, with PSG overcoming Barcelona 4-1 on the night, and 6-4 on aggregate.

Barcelona entered the second leg at Camp Nou with an advantage after a 3-2 victory in Paris last week. However, goals from Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha and a double from Kylian Mbappe saw Xavi's side exit the competition.

Meanwhile, Bundesliga giants Dortmund triumphed 4-2 over Atletico Madrid, advancing to the semi-finals with a 5-4 aggregate win. Edin Terzic's team looked set for elimination in the 70th minute, but late goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Marcel Sabitzer turned the tide.

The remaining quarter-final matches will take place on Wednesday night, with Arsenal facing Bayern Munich away and Manchester City hosting Real Madrid at the Etihad. Both ties hang in the balance after captivating first-leg encounters.

The Gunners secured a 2-2 draw against Thomas Tuchel's squad at the Emirates, in a match that saw the lead change hands multiple times. Similarly, Pep Guardiola's team led twice at the Santiago Bernabeu, only to end up with a 3-3 draw against Los Blancos.

If two more goals are scored in the second-leg matches of these fixtures, this round will set a new record as the highest-scoring Champions League quarter-final round ever, surpassing the 2003/04 season.

With a total of 29 goals already scored, it seems almost inevitable that the previous record of 30 will be broken, given the trend of the previous games. The 03/04 season saw some remarkable aggregate scores that caused quite a stir.

Monaco advanced past Real Madrid through the now-abandoned away goals rule after the ties ended 5-5 on aggregate. Chelsea ousted the legendary Arsenal 'Invincibles' team with a 3-2 victory.

Deportivo emerged as 5-4 victors against AC Milan, while Jose Mourinho's Porto team defeated Lyon 4-2 on their journey to winning the entire competition. The self-proclaimed 'special one' triumphed over Monaco 3-0 in the final, marking the first of his two Champions League wins as manager of Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
