Charity's netball tournament draws record attendances

A county homelessness charity has hosted its biggest fundraiser to date.

Maggs Day Centre hosted a tournament at MSJ Sports Centre on Sunday (June 23), with a record-breaking 31 netball and mixed netball teams taking part.

With over 200 participants, the fundraiser saw £1,372.25 raised.

The event also included face painting, a stocked raffle stand with prizes from businesses in the area, and mouth-watering food provided by Dirty D’s and Calabbria Streetfood.

Melissa Blewitt, marketing and relations manager at the charity, said: "On behalf of the team at Maggs, we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the tournament on Sunday.

"From umpires to players, the team at MSJ Sports Centre, Dirty D’s Calabbria Streetfood and all of the local businesses who donated towards our raffle prizes, the whole day was fantastic, with lots of players expressing how much of a great day they had."

Donations for prizes came from businesses such as West Midlands Safari Park, Worcester County Cricket Club, Malvern Senerity, Mac & Jacs, Malvern Theatres, and many others.

The day concluded with Amazons winning the female competition and Springballs from Malvern Springs winning the mixed.

Ms Blewitt added: "The money raised will be going towards Maggs to help us continue our services, whether this be to continue food and support for our service users in our day centres or our countywide outreach teams.

"This event followed all of the wonderful feedback we had from our teams last year at our first-ever sports tournament, so we feel fortunate that we’ve managed to complete another successful event and raise a fantastic amount of money.

"We’re looking forward to making it bigger and better next year."

Maggs provides support for the homeless across the county, runs two-day centres in Worcester and Malvern along with four properties for temporarily housing rough sleepers through its accommodation project.
