The 56-year-old actor has teased that he will reprise his role as Jim McDonald in the ITV soap this winter after speaking with his co-star Simon Gregson, who portrays his on-screen son Steve McDonald, every week since his exit.

Speaking to The Sun, Charles said: “I speak to Simon every fortnight or every week in fact, and he always lets me know what’s going on and I believe there’s the possibility of something happening sort of over the winter time.

"I had 11 years full time on there, 10 of which were brilliant and all the storylines since I’ve gone back have been good.

"You don’t bring Jim back just to have a pint in the Rovers. There’s always something big.”

The details on Jim’s possible return are being kept tightly under wraps for now but it’s believed his arrival on the cobbles could have something to do with Steve’s recent baby bombshell.

The hapless businessman has just found out he’s expecting a child with his neighbour Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) following a boozy bunk-up earlier this year.

While he’s desperate to be a part of his unborn child’s life, Steve is concerned his marriage with Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) will be over for good if she finds out about his one night stand with their good friend.

Jim was last seen in prison, where he was behind bars alongside fellow Weatherfield resident Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne), who is set to return to the show.
