Picked up to series in January after nearly a year in development, Criminal is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multiple Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker (Westworld, Batman: Caped Crusader) and Sean Phillips.

Hunnam will play Leo, aka Coward, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.

Hunnam joins a cast that also includes Richard Jenkins, Adria Arjona and Kadeem Hardison.

Brubaker will serve as co-showrunner on Criminal alongside crime fiction author Jordan Harper (Gotham, Hightown). Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden will direct the first four episodes of the series, which is exec produced by Brubaker, Harper, Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener and Philipp Barnett. Legendary Television exec produces the series alongside Amazon MGM Studios.

The Sons of Anarchy alum’s credits also include Apple’s Shantaram and features King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Lost City, Papillon, Rebel Moon, Children of Men and Cold Mountain. He also starred in the original British version of Queer as Folk. He’s repped by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Sloan Offer.

A premiere timeframe for Criminal has not yet been determined.
