The charming town too many people bypass that's actually well worth the trip

Many a tourist visiting the picturesque region of Gwynedd might choose to conquer the towering Cadair Idris, standing at 2,930ft (or 893 metres), stroll around the historic ruins of Cymer Abbey, or head to the nearby seaside resorts. There's also an abundance of scenic routes along the Mawddach Trail to explore.

However, if you're short on time, Dolgellau itself has plenty to offer. The town centre, nestled amidst the tranquil Eryri countryside, is bustling with activity and charm. During a brief stopover last week, I took a leisurely walk around the town centre on a sunny day. I was taken aback by the multitude of pubs, hotels and craft shops housed in the attractive buildings surrounding Eldon Square/Sgwar Eldon.

It's no surprise that a town which hosts the Sesiwn Fawr bilingual music festival, showcasing a wealth of Welsh and international talent, boasts its own music shop - Mwy na siop gitar (More than a guitar shop). Dolgellau even has its own radio station - Pirate Radio Dolgellau, complete with images of pirate ships reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean adorning the station windows, reports North Wales Live. I also had the pleasure of visiting the Celf Aran Arts Co-operative gallery and shop, where I was captivated by the vibrant and emotive landscape and seascape paintings, photography and ceramics on display.

I soon also realised there was an abundant selection of eateries available, from charming hotels such as the Royal Ship, to local favourites like Y Sospan and Cosy Fish and Chips - I was truly spoilt for choice. I ended up grabbing a quick meal at Popty'r Dref.

With the summer day persisting, I then decided to pay Torrents Walk Hotel a visit for a refreshing drink. Inside was a sanctuary of comfort where one could easily sit back and take in sports like the Cricket World Cup being displayed on the TV. The Torrents Walk makes quite a cosy environment with its exposed wooden beams and cushioned chairs that perfectly complement its rustic character - a feature further enhanced by prints of miners, a brass ensemble and Harlech Castle adorning the walls. Intriguingly, I spotted Gwin Dylanwad Wine shop close by announcing its "Riesling Week" in July, adding to its array of luxury foods already stocked.

Strolling around, I discovered Waterloo - Studio One, and Medi, delightful shops offering unique gift options like prints, retro furniture, scented candles and cards to name but a few.

Throughout my time in town, it became clear that visitors with passions ranging from music and art to gastronomy would be provided with something special, without even having to load up with mountaineering gear.

* A reminder for music lovers that Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau, featuring talents such as David Pasquet, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Steve Eaves and more, will be taking place at Y Ship from July 18 - July 21.
