The cheapest places in Teesside to buy petrol this weekend

The cheapest place in Teesside to fill up your car with petrol this weekend is at Sainsbury's.

According to the latest data supplied by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £3.30 by filling up at Sainsbury's garages in the region, compared to the most expensive petrol station.

The Sainsbury's garages at Whitehouse Farm, Stockton, and also at Wilson Street, in Middlesbrough, are charging motorists 140.9p per litre, which means it would cost £77.50 to fill up an average 55 litre tank.

Teesside Live has listed the cheapest garages in the region as the RAC warned that British drivers are paying higher prices than they should be for petrol and diesel. The motoring organisation said fuel retailers are not cutting prices in line with a reduction in wholesale fuel prices.

The average price for a litre of petrol across the Teesside region this week is 143.1p.

The most expensive filling station in Teesside is a Esso station at Rectory Lane, Redcar and Cleveland. The cost of standard petrol at this station is 146.9p, meaning it would cost a total of £80.80 to fill up an average family car at this forecourt.

For the owners of diesel cars, the cheapest place to fill up is also the two Sainsbury's garages at Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough. The cost of a litre of standard diesel at this forecourt was 145.9p, according to prices supplied by retailers.

UK drivers are currently paying 145.2p per litre of petrol, while people who own diesel vehicles are forking out 150.2p on average.

In Teesside owners of petrol cars are currently being charged 1.6p less than the national average of 145.2p.

Diesel car drivers in Teesside are paying 1.5p less than the national average.

The cheapest place to buy petrol in the country is at a Sainsbury's garage in Belfast where a litre of standard petrol is 137.9p. The most expensive petrol station in the country is a BP garage in West Northamptonshire where motorists are charged 173.9p a litre.

The prices quoted are for standard grade petrol (E10) and for standard grade diesel (B7). The figures are supplied by the major retailers under a voluntary scheme launched by the Competition and Markets Authority to ensure motorists are given a fair deal at the petrol pumps. Most of the major petrol retailers have signed up to the scheme and the petrol stations supplying up-to-date information account for around 60 per cent of the fuel sold in the UK. The price of fuel is often cheaper at Costco outlets, but their service is only available to members.
