Cheeky Raphinha bid, Man United wildcard - Newcastle United summer transfer target verdict

Newcastle United are targeting quality over quantity when it comes to the summer transfer window, with the Magpies knowing it's more a case of finessing an already strong squad than bulk buying.

While more quality in any area of the pitch would be welcome, the feeling among the majority of United fans is that a right winger should be high on the list of priorities. Whether the club will cash in on someone like Miggy Almiron remains to be seen, but the addition of a right-sided forward of the quality of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon would have the black-and-white faithful excited for the new season.

There are plenty of options out there too - athough most will come at a hefty price. United could look at those with Premier League experience or opt for a candidate from abroad, as they did with Isak and Bruno Guimaraes previously. Here, our writers have their say on who Newcastle should target should they decide to go big on invest heavily in a right winger.

If Newcastle United are serious about upgrading their right wing options, they need to go all out. Links to Bryan Mbeumo, Pedro Neto and Michael Olise are all tempting, especially the third on that list, but I'd personally be pushing for a Jarrod Bowen swoop.

The West Ham United winger famously almost joined the Magpies before the 2021 takeover, only for the move to fall through as Bowen left Hull City for the Hammers rather than the Magpies. Persuading the England international to leave east London won't prove easy but with 20 goals in 44 matches last season, it would be a bold statement of intent to try and poach the 27-year-old for a new challenge up north.

43 goals and 30 assists in 143 Premier League appearances is a stellar record - and just the type Newcastle should be chasing. You don't become Jurgen Klopp's 'favourite player' if you're not a top quality asset. £50m or £60m? It's a no-brainer for Newcastle to try their luck this summer.

Newcastle United's need for an upgrade on the right wing is a very tricky one. The first question is, will they actually get one? Eddie Howe is a big of both Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy and I'm not certain either will be leaving this summer.

That being said, Almiron is probably most likely out of anyone in the squad to go - so let's say he does, who comes in?

My first choice would be Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford - he's such a good player. He's arguably more important to The Bees than Ivan Toney. He is a goalscorer and provider and at 24, has the best years of him. He's scored 50 times for Brentford in 200 games - supplying a further 42 goals for his team-mates. He seems open to a new challenge and would prove an instant upgrade of Almiron or Murphy.

The issue is, he would cost you the best part of £60m and with other priorities on the pitch, will Newcastle spend that?

Other names that could be worth a look include Manchester United's Amad Diallo. It sounds a hopeful suggestion but for whatever reason, he's not being used by Erik ten Hag and if Newcastle could get in his ear and suggest a real chance of the first team at team chasing European football - maybe he could force the issue.

Another name is Anthony Elanga - a real bright spark for Nottingham Forest last season with five goals and nine assists - having moved for £15m, he's probably worth near double that but it would be a small price to pay for a man of his talent, just ask Dan Burn about him!

Newcastle United might actually have the answer to their right wing dilemma within their ranks already. His name is Yankuba Minteh. The 19-year-old enjoyed a great season on loan to Feyenoord with 10 goals in 28 games. It might be too early for him to make that jump to a Premier League regular, but he would save the club tens of millions if he did.

If Newcastle had to splash the cash on a new winger, Jarrod Bowen would be my first choice but West Ham would demand a price the Magpies would be unable to match.

So I'd consider a cheeky bid to Barcelona for Raphinha. The Catalan club need the money and have never seemed fully sold on the ex-Leeds man's abilities.

This summer's transfer window will, in some parts, be dominated around a chase for a winger from the Championship with Newcastle joining seemingly every other top-flight club in being linked with Leeds United Crysencio Summerville. Make no mistake, the 22-year-old Dutchman is a talent and has the ability to be a big hit in the top-flight. The trouble here is, he's a left winger and not a right-sided player.

So in the interests of the remit, let's look at the right sided options. Another ex-Leeds man in current Barcelona star Raphinha would be a shrewd acquisition, while Michael Olise from Crystal Palace would be a huge hit with the St James' Park faithful.

For a number of reasons, mainly the price tags associated with the pair, I can't see either of those deals happening so I'm going to go with maybe an unfashionable selection in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The 24-year-old's injury last season dampened some of the talk around a player who looked quality when fit. For those that love their stats, his xG and xA last season have him in the Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka bracket, but he won't cost anything like. It's a deal I think Newcastle could get done at a price that wouldn't break the bank.

If Newcastle are to be again limited in their summer business then I would have no issues with spending the majority of the budget on one player. While there are plenty of options available, at a price, if United are to spend big then it needs to be on a player who will hit the ground running.

That means Premier League experience and although that adds to the pricetag, it's worth it in short term at least. Crystal Palace's Michael Olise jumps out as a clear candidate. He ticks so many of the boxes that Newcastle United love.

He's young, has pace, skill and energy and is a guaranteed improvement on what they already have. United may have to pay in excess of £60m for him, but if that's offset by selling Almiron then it starts to become more realistic.
