Chelsea star Cole Palmer makes Newcastle admission that made him think 'oh no'

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has admitted that he had his 'worst' game of the season against Newcastle United.

Chelsea suffered a 4-1 defeat at St James' Park back in November despite going into half-time level after Raheem Sterling cancelled out Alexander Isak's opener. Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton both scored for Newcastle in the space of just 90 seconds in the second half, before Reece James was sent off for the visitors, and Anthony Gordon grabbed a fourth late on.

Palmer was well-defended by Tino Livramento throughout and the forward, who had scored in his previous games against Manchester City and Spurs, ultimately failed to have a single shot. It was rather telling that Palmer, the Premier League young player of the season, who went on to have the most goal involvements in the top-flight, was taken off with a quarter of an hour still to go following James' red card.

Palmer had been fresh from winning his first senior England caps, against Malta and North Macedonia, but the manner of the defeat brought the 22-year-old right back down to earth.

"My first camp was in November and I remember thinking after that, 'Right, I need to step up a bit more here,'" he told talkSPORT. "I remember getting back and we had Newcastle away. That was the first game and I had the worst game I had of the season. I thought, 'Oh no.'"
