A 19-year-old from Chester-le-Street with cerebral palsy has been raising money for charity by walking around his garden after being inspired by the late Captain Tom Moore.

Dominic Wright wanted to fundraise however he could as part of Christian Aid week from May 13-18, helping others less fortunate.

Seeing the impact that Captain Tom made during the Covid lockdown, Dominic, who uses a walker or wheelchair, decided to do 10 laps of his garden, around the circumference of his house, every day for a week. So he set a fundraising target of £200, which was quickly beaten just days into his week long challenge, with the total now sitting at over £400.

Dominic, who is a writer, described the walking as a "significant challenge" as he struggles to walk far without his walker or a wheelchair. He said: "I’m in extreme pain most of the time and also suffer from recurring chest infections which leaves me debilitated a lot."

Speaking about the challenge, Dominic said: "I go to see my uncle every day and we were sat watching TV when I saw a Christian Aid advert. I wanted to do something to help people in poverty but I never thought that I would be able to do something, and thinking about Captain Tom made me realise that I could.

"Walking around for a long period of time is hard for me as it is painful for my legs, but I know how much of an impact donations can have so I wanted to try my best. I'm shocked that we reached the target so quickly so I have moved it up to £400.

"Whatever amount people can give is hugely appreciated as even a pound can make such a big difference to people. Thanks to people who have already donated, I am so grateful that you have chosen to help me out with this.

"This experience has definitely made me want to continue fundraising and helping charities, there is a suicide prevention organisation on Percy Street that I would like to support as I understand how big of an impact suicide can have on people. It feels like this is a growing issue in our region so for my next time raising money I would like to support this cause."
