Chevy Chase lampoons latest Saturday Night Live cast: 'It's the worst f***ing humour in the world'

The ever-outspoken Chevy Chase has lampooned the current cast of Saturday Night Live, saying he cannot believe producer Lorne Michaels “has gone so low”.

Chase was part of the first ever Saturday Night Live cast, but ended up leaving the series after just one season.

Speaking to The Washington Post, he said: “First of all, between you and me and a lamppost, jeez, I don’t want to put down Lorne or the cast, but I’ll just say, maybe off the record, I’m amazed that Lorne has gone so low. I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t f***ing believe it.”

He continued: “That means a whole generation of s***heads laughs at the worst f***ing humour in the world. You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse s**t than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts.”

Questioned about when the show was last funny, Chase said thing began to go downhill after just two years. “Why am I saying that? Because I was in it? I guess,” he said. ”That’s a horrible thing to say. But certainly I never had more fun. I really loved it and enjoyed it. I didn’t see the same fun thing happening to the cast the next year.”

Chase then commented on certain former Saturday Night Live cast members, calling Will Ferrell “just not funny” and saying he did not understand the “folderol” around Tina Fey.

On Kristen Wiig, he said: “I liked her a lot. She had two things going for her. She had clear-cut chops, and she was pretty, too. But what happened to her? Where did she go?”

He then spoke about Eddie Murphy: “I thought Eddie Murphy was funny. Gumby. I found that funny and people loved that. . . Stevie Wonder, he did well. [Pause.] It’s not that hard, for Christ’s sake. Your skin’s the same colour. You just put on some sunglasses and do this.”

Chase has been a controversial in recent years, with his comments on the set of the TV show Community, as revealed by Donald Glover, being criticised.

“People think you’re funnier because you’re black,” he allegedly told the actor. Commenting on Glover’s allegations, Chase admitted he “could have said it” but that the comment was meant to be a joke.

Chase’s most recent work includes the Netflix movie The Last Laugh, which will debut on the streaming service later this year.
