Chicago Fire: Severide Is Back on the Job as Arson Case ‘Tests’ His Marriage — 2024 FIRST LOOK (Exclusive)

Taylor Kinney is back as Severide in TVLine’s exclusive photos from Chicago Fire’s Season 12 premiere, but it might be too soon to breathe a sigh of relief.

While the rescue squad lieutenant has returned to the Windy City, working alongside Ritter and Carver on a call in the above first look (and with Brett and Cruz below), his marriage to Stella Kidd is still in a precarious place.

Per the official synopsis for the season opener, which it titled “Barely Gone,” “an arson case tests Kidd and Severide’s relationship.” Uh oh. But also, given everything that the couple has been through lately, it’s not entirely surprising that Severide’s homecoming won’t solve all of “Stellaride’s” problems.

In January, Kinney took a leave of absence from the firefighter drama to deal with a personal matter, resulting in script rewrites to account for why Severide was missing in action. The actor last appeared in the Feb. 22 installment, and his character’s absence was explained in the March 1 episode, when it was revealed that Severide had gone to Alabama for an arson investigation training program. But Stella later learned that he was no longer in Alabama, having been recruited to help with an ATF investigation. After Severide was vague about the job and a timetable for his return to Chicago, Stella decided in the May 24 season finale to take some time off work to go bring her husband back home.

Elsewhere in the Season 12 premiere, “Firehouse 51 is forced to share its space with Firehouse 17. Kidd and Herrmann fight over Ritter,” reads the logline. Plus, “Firehouse 51 says goodbye to one of its own,” when Alberto Rosende, who has played Blake Gallo for four seasons, exits the NBC drama in the episode.

More change is also ahead for the firehouse crew: As TVLine previously reported, Kara Killmer will return to the show in Season 12 — but it will be her last year as paramedic Sylvie Brett. The exact timetable/episode for her exit has not been revealed yet. Meanwhile, Rome Flynn (How to Get Away With Murder) has joined the series in the recurring role of a potential recruit for Truck 81.

Chicago Fire Season 12 premieres Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 9/8c on NBC for a shortened 13-episode season.
