‘Chillinois.’ ‘Taylor Drift.’ ‘Skilling It.’ These are among the finalists in the city’s snowplow naming contest.
“Chillinois.” “CTRL-SALT-DELETE.” Yes, even “Taylor Drift.”
These are just a few of the creative finalists announced Monday in the city’s second annual “You Name A Snowplow” contest. So if you’ve ever wanted to see “Snowprah Windfrey” clearing a road, now’s your chance.
There’s even a proposed tribute to Chicago’s beloved snow expert, Tom Skilling, the longtime WGN-TV chief meteorologist who announced his retirement in October: “Skilling It.”
Residents can vote on the 50 finalists until Feb. 2. The top six names will be displayed on a snowplow in each snow district, joining last year’s winners, according to the Department of Streets and Sanitation.
“Once again, we’ve had a great time reviewing all the innovative and unique names submitted by residents, many of which were Chicago-themed,” Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Cole Stallard said in a statement. “Now the race is on, and we would love all Chicago residents to vote for their favorite snowplow names.”
The participants who submitted the winning names will be offered a photo opportunity beside their named plow and city swag.
Chicago isn’t the only city dubbing its winter vehicles. Park Ridge announced the names of its snowplow fleet in November — including “Han Snolo” and “Sir Plows a Lot.”
The Department of Streets and Sanitation manages more than 9,400 lane miles of roadway with over 300 salt spreaders each winter, officials said. There are more than 400,000 tons of salt stationed across the city. To follow the fleet amid a storm, use the city’s plow tracker.
Chicago residents can vote on the snowplow names at chicagoshovels.org. The list includes:
