Chord Overstreet wants 'Acapulco' character to lean into 'ruthlessness' if Apple TV+ show continues

The actor shares some ideas for his lovingly naive character's future

Starting off with a bushy beard after a "spiritual awakening," Chord Overstreet's Chad in the Apple TV+ show Acapulco had a lot of explore in Season 3. Frequently providing the comic relief in any scene he's in, including numerous mispronunciations of Machu Picchu, Chad continued to be endearingly naive.

When we leave Chad in the final episode of the season, he finds out about his mom, Diane (played by Jessica Collins), engaging in some romance with Hector (Rafael Cebrián). Diane also expresses how proud she is that Chad has seemingly found his place at Las Colinas.

For fans of the series who are hoping for a Season 4, Overstreet has a few thoughts on what he would like to see if Chad's story continues.

"I would like to see him live undercover for certain reasons and have a little bit of his ruthlessness come out for his family," Overstreet told Yahoo Canada. "The hero mentality takes over a little bit, and try to really right some wrongs."

Describing what it was like to play Chad in Season 3 of Acapulco, Overstreet highlighted that he had the rare opportunity to put a "different twist" on the character.

"I talked to our creators and showrunners a little bit about what they had in store for my character before we even we got into filming in Season 3, ... we talked about who's my dad and what am I going to do, where am I going to find myself," Overstreet said.

"I leave and I come back having the spiritual awakening from spending time up on Machu Picchu. The beard is real but Austin [Winsberg], our creator, was like, 'Don't shave or cut your hair for the next few months.' ... It got kind of crazy."

A core element of Chad is still his relationship with his mom, Diane, with Overstreet describing his costar Collins as "such a special person to work with."

"I also learn from her just by working with her, but she's super kind and really easy to work with," he said.

"Every year I get closer and closer with her. ... Our chemistry gets better and she's really giving, as far as working opposite of her. So it's not hard to jump into the mother-son dynamic and play around. ... We get to spend a lot of time [together] off camera, we're singing and getting to know each other, which I think really just helps with that mother-son relationship."

According to Overstreet, one of his favourite things about working on Acapulco is being transported into this vibrant, '80s resort, including the decade-specific costumes.

"You see Raphael [Cebrián] strutting around like a character out of Back to the Future or something, ... it makes it even easier to drop into," Overstreet said.

"I remember the first night when they first built out one of the old sets in Season 1, I walked into the offices and everything is so detailed down to the filing cabinets, these these old phones, the lampshades, and you're just like, 'Oh wow, I literally walked into the '80s.'"
