The American hip hop star Chris Brown has been arrested in Paris on suspicion of rape.

The 29-year-old was arrested in Paris on Monday, say French police officials. He is being held in custody with two other men, one of which is his bodyguard.

A woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reported the rape allegations on Monday in north-west Paris.

According to the French edition of Closer magazine, a 24-year-old woman alleged she was raped at Brown’s hotel suite on the night of 15 January.

Prosecutors confirmed the 29-year-old faced criminal charges after the alleged sex attack.

In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to the felony assault of his then girlfriend, the singer Rihanna. He was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service. In July, he was arrested on a charge of felony battery in Florida and released on bail.

Brown is one of the most successful US artists, having sold more than 100 million records.

He is banned from entering the UK because of his criminal record.

Sony has not commented on Brown’s behalf.
