Chris Davies has coaching staff plan after inheriting Ashley Cole at Birmingham City

Incoming Birmingham City boss Chris Davies plans to work with some of the existing staff at the club – but he does want to bring ‘two or three’ coaches with him.

Davies will inherit assistant coach Ashley Cole, who joined Blues last October, and long-term goalkeeping coach Maik Taylor. The future of Pete Shuttleworth – a Wayne Rooney appointment last year – also needs to be decided.

Cole made a positive impression on Tony Mowbray and Gary Rowett after being given limited responsibilities by Rooney. The 45-year-old combines his Blues duties with a role on the England under-21s coaching staff.

Shuttleworth, meanwhile, has just been handed a temporary spot on the Republic of Ireland’s staff by former Blues coach John O’Shea, who is acting as their interim manager. Rowett redeployed Shuttleworth for the final six weeks of last season.

In an interview with Blues TV, Davies commented: “There will be two or three people that I’ve worked with at previous clubs that I will look to bring in, that I know and have worked with. Then I’ll be working with a lot of the current staff that are here as well, the resident staff and the people that have been here.

“I think that’s important and that creates the best blend because you’re bringing fresh energy and new ideas but you also retain some of the good qualities that are here in the building. That’s my plan.”
