The re-vamped Top Gear has been dogged with rumours since, what feels like, the very dawn of time.

The latest piece of gossip doing the rounds is that host Chris Evans has hired Danny Baker to write his jokes for him.

The Daily Star reports that Chris threw a bit of a diva-strop after no one even tittered at one-liners he thought were particularly funny.

So, now Chris has apparently called in his old mate Danny, who used to write some of the TFI Friday gags, in the hope he’ll get the audience laughing.

A source told the paper: “Chris can be a right laugh but it was felt the scripts needed an extra boost.

“Danny is a real wit and he will make sure the audience and the viewers are belly-laughing.”

Earlier this week, Chris said that the new series of Top Gear, which is the first since Jeremy Clarkson’s infamous sacking, will be ‘less blokey’ and contain less schoolboy gags than his predecessor.

He promised a more ‘inclusive’ feel to the show that debuts tonight on BBC2.

Chris is joined by ex-Friends star Matt Le Blanc. Their working relationship has been subject to much media speculation, with claims that they hate each other.
