Chris Tarrant has been banned from driving and ordered to pay a fine after pleading guilty to driving over the legal limit in an incident last December.

The former Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? host was found to have 50 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath after he was reported by fellow pub-goers in Berkshire on December 16 last year. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Today (January 18), Tarrant – who admitted drink-driving – was banned from driving for 12 months and fined £6,000.

Shortly after the hearing, the presenter told reporters (via BBC News): "I made a mistake and I paid for it. I shouldn't have driven."

Before sentencing, District Judge Shomon Khan told Reading Magistrates Court that despite the "relatively low reading", nothing Tarrant could say would "reduce the seriousness of the offence".

Reflecting on the incident, Tarrant is reported to have said he "honestly didn't think" he had been over the legal limit before making his journey home.

The presenter is best known as the host of Saturday morning kids' TV series TISWAS and long-running quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.

Tarrant recently ruled out a comeback to the game show, saying: "The biggest problem is it was about making someone a millionaire. It's got to be that sort of money.

"You can't call it Who Wants to Win £50? It wouldn't work. You couldn't even change it to £100,000, it wouldn't be the same. So it's a very expensive show to make."
