A new church hall will be built in Coventry. The block, with space for 110-220 people, will be developed at St Elizabeth Catholic Church in Foleshill.

It will replace an old 1930s parish hall that was in a bad state of repair and has been knocked down. Documents said the planned building offers a "place of safety" and pointed out that there are few other places in the community where children can play safely.

The report claimed the previous hall had been a "home from home" for the local community. It provided space for families in "overcrowded, low quality housing" to eat and spend time together, the statement by Exi Design said.

The new single-storey block will have space for private counselling or small group work, the plans added. The site will have a community hall, kitchen, plant, store and toilets.

A council officer said the hall is well-designed and will improve the area. They recommended that the building is only used from 8am to 10pm.

Permission for the scheme was granted yesterday (23 April.)
