City supplies remain plentiful for weather

Jan. 19—DANVILLE — Another winter weather event hit Danville Thursday night, and the City of Danville remains prepared for more.

Dave Ruwe, operations administrator with the city's public works department, says the city had about 4,000 tons of salt on hand earlier this week for winter weather operations.

The city had used about 300 tons of salt this year, prior to Thursday.

"We are always preparing for the worst possible forecast while hoping for the best. Storm systems can always go a different direction than originally anticipated. Sometimes that will work in our favor as it did last weekend, and other times it will not," according to Ruwe.

"We have had many times where we were expecting smaller accumulations and ended up with more as well. In most cases, we have a good idea of what to expect, but the actual ice and/or snowfall totals and accumulations will change our response to the event. For that reason, we want to always be prepared for the worst to keep motorists in Danville as safe as possible while traveling in our city," he stated.

Ruwe says they look at expected forecasts and what the temperatures have been in the recent days.

"We always watch the temperatures of the pavement as this plays a big part in what the precipitation does once it has fallen onto the roads. We have multiple route systems in place that are utilized in different situations, and those always vary by the event. In general, depending on the event, we would have anywhere from four trucks salting the main roads to 21 trucks plowing every street in town. When snow or ice is expected, we also typically pre-treat our bridges and hills to ensure those stay as safe as possible during any given event," Ruwe stated.
