IS Claims Deadly Double Bombing In Yemen

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a bomb attack that killed at least 20 people at a Yemeni mosque.

A suicide bomber, named by the militants as Quay al-Sanaani, detonated his device inside the mosque in the country's capital, Sanaa.

As casualties pleaded for help, a car bomb exploded outside an entrance to the mosque - injuring more people.

It is the latest attack by the country's Islamic State affiliate. Suicide bombings on 20 March killed 137 people and injured 345.

Yemen has been struggling through civil war since its capital was captured by Shia rebels, known as Houthis, in September.

The mosque that was attacked is used by both Sunni and Shia Muslims, but in a message on social media the IS affiliate said the bombing was revenge against the Houthis.

The Iranian-backed rebels have also been targeted by Saudi-led and US-backed airstrikes since March.

The Houthis are demanding more rights for Yemen's Zaydi Shia Muslims, who are regarded as heretics by the Sunni state.

More than 2,100 civilians have been killed in the conflict, according to the United Nations.
