Air fryers have become a kitchen essential for many, but they can be a real hassle to clean.

For those who find themselves reaching for the air fryer more frequently than the oven, the challenge of keeping it clean is all too familiar. Unlike ovens, which might get a pass on thorough cleaning for a couple of months, air fryers demand attention after each use.

However, appliance specialists assure that there's no need to splash out on costly cleaners or waste hours scrubbing away. They recommend a straightforward, homemade solution that can quickly eliminate the grease and grime.

The Mirror reports that the team at Hiatt Hardware have outlined "five simple steps" to effectively clean your air fryer, and they're incredibly easy to follow. The first step is just basic safety - make sure the air fryer is switched off and unplugged to avoid any burns or electrical mishaps.

When it comes to the second step, tackling the air fryer basket the part you can remove is key. Simply immerse it in warm, soapy water and give it a good scrub with a sponge.

The experts highlight the importance of focusing on areas with tough residue, although the soapy water should lift most of the dirt without much trouble. The "trusty, DIY cleaning solution" is introduced in step three.

This stage still involves cleaning the baskets but ensures you go the "extra mile" to tackle "stubborn areas and grime stains". The homemade cleaning solution consists of equal parts white vinegar and water.

You just need to soak your baskets in this mixture and wait for the grime to loosen. Then, simply wipe down the baskets.

After ensuring your baskets are spotless, proceed to step four - wiping down the heating element. Ensure your air fryer has cooled down completely before this step. All it takes is a slightly damp cloth to clean the heating coil inside your appliance.

Pay extra attention to any splatters as these can be breeding grounds for bacteria over time. If "grease is stubborn inside the coil", consider using a dish brush to reach into every nook of the coil.

To finish off, step five involves drying all the cleaned components and reassembling your air fryer. Once put back together, place your air fryer back in its usual spot on your counter or store it away in a cupboard, ready for its next use.
