Cleaning Up raises questions about the difficulty of Microsoft Excel
ITV's Cleaning Up returned for episode two on Wednesday night (January 16) and viewers were still left scratching their heads over the show's gaping plot holes.
The drama follows single mum Sam (Sheridan Smith), who's struggling to raise her two daughters thanks to her dire financial state, which isn't helped by her gambling problem.
But Sam finds a sneaky, and very illegal, way to get rich quick when she begins dealing in insider trading, using the information she gathers during her job as a cleaner at a top financial firm.
While episode one left viewers wondering how Sam managed to get her hands on the firm's financial data so easily (what about the UK's General Data Protection Regulation?), the next instalment raised even more questions.
In one scene, viewers were shown Sam attending a job interview at a recruitment firm where she tried and failed to use Microsoft Excel.
Then, a few scenes later, Sam's computer skills drastically improved as she was able to download confidential files to a zip drive.
#CleaningUp She couldn’t create a table in excel yet she managed to download company files off a work computer...yeh right 🤭🤭

Using excel ✖️
Downloading files to a flash drive ✔️
Sam has a unique set of I.T. skills 🤷🏻♀️

Sam can’t use excel for an interview 2 mins later she’s a pro at stealing files from someone else’s computer ❓❓❓#CleaningUp

Can’t use Excel but can sneak way in to use USB stick to download stuff 🤔#CleaningUp

#CleaningUp Hang on, how come she suddenly knows what to do with a memory stick when Excel floored her??

She may have exaggerated her skills in Excel, but at least that computer was logged in for her...just like every computer, in every office, she is in.#CleaningUp

She couldn't work Excel at the interview but now, all of a sudden she can hack these computers?? #CleaningUp

However, there were some viewers who jumped to Sam's defence, as they themselves are yet to master Excel.
#CleaningUp TBF Dragging desktop files to USB is hardly advanced computing! She probably does it at home with photos. Excel is much scarier! Way more unbelievable is her car having 8K miles.

All these people complaining ‘she can’t use excel but she can download files’. Copy and paste, drag and drop is simple, I could teach my gran. Doesn’t mean she’d be able to use excel though 🤦🏽♀️ #ffs #switchoff #CleaningUp

To be fair, Excel is a bitch. I don’t think anyone is truly comfortable with those damn spreadsheets. I don’t think I’ve ever created Pivot Tables or used a V LOOKUP with complete confidence 😂😂 #cleaningup

There was also the issue of Sam being able to go into the office during the day and look through an employee's computer.
After paying someone to set off a fire alarm, Sam was able to look on the computers freely – as clearly no one ever locks their screen and the building has no cameras.
Seriously does this place not have cameras? I might go into cleaning if it’s this easy to rob the stock exchange... #CleaningUp

How many companies would have such lax security with workers not bothering to lock their computers? Cleaners usually clean in the evenings not in the middle of the day #CleaningUp

First rule of computer club; lock your computer! 🤔 #CleaningUp

OMG Sam is so obvious! Besides when you work in a bank you have to lock your screen when you leave your desk. #CleaningUp

Cleaning Up continues next week when Sam will have hopefully decided which 3D printer firm to invest in. Why not both? She is a gambler, after all.
Cleaning Up continues next Wednesday (January 23) at 9pm on ITV.
