Cleanup Begins in Oaxaca After Hurricane Agatha

Hurricane Agatha lashed beach resorts on Mexico’s southern coast on Monday, May 30, bringing torrential rains, strong winds and the threat of flooding.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Agatha made landfall west of Puerto Angel, in Mexico’s Oaxaca state, as a Category 2 storm, with maximum sustained winds near 105 mph (165 km/h) with higher gusts.

The NHC warned of “life-threatening, hurricane-force winds” in parts of the hurricane warning area in Oaxaca, as well as “extremely dangerous” coastal flooding on Monday night.

Agatha was later downgraded to a tropical storm, according to Mexico’s national meteorological service.
