The doors of once popular pub The Phoenix in Exmouth are finally set to reopen again following a well over due make-over and ambitious plans for its future. The pub on Exeter Road briefly reopened towards the end of last year after being closed for several years.

However, it soon closed again leaving locals wondering if it would suffer the same fate it had previously. Two Devon business owners, including one with links to the local music scene, have now snapped it up.

It is currently undergoing a refurbishment and will reopen as a live music venue and community pub at a yet-to-be-confirmed date in June. Live music will be played in the pub every week from Thursday to Sunday as well as a ticket-only tribute nights to add to the calendar.

On other nights of the week, there will be traditional pub entertainment such as bingo and quizzes. The venue would like two darts teams and two pool teams and local sporting clubs to join and make it their home with a friendly mascot that is yet to be named.

A spokesman for The Phoenix said: "It will be the rise of The Phoenix. The pub has been closed for a long time and what we want to do is turn it into a proper pub with live entertainment. It will be the hub of the town for all ages from 18 to 100.

"BarCraft Ltd will be really versatile with our drink offers. We can't compete with Wetherspoon but we're aiming for that level of spend and just want to make it a really nice, welcoming environment to come into.

"The previous landlord opened it for four months after doing little to none work to it, but it still looked like the same pub from when it shut years ago. It then closed again around Christmas.

"We took it over this month and are repainting it, putting in new furnishings, television screens, a sound system and pool and darts area.

"It will be a wet-led pub that is open seven days a week serving fair-price drinks.

"Since the closure of The Bank, it's been up in the air where to go for live music. There is already a stage in The Phoenix and we're hoping to get a later licence so that when bands finish the party can carry on with a disco.

"We'd love to turn it into a pub/ club as there's no club in Exmouth. We're trying to think out of the box to get the right vibe down here."

The Phoenix has been known by different names over the years. It was previously O’Malley’s Inn and before that the Town Crier and further back than that it as called the Royal Oak. There are no plans to change its current name.
