JJ Abrams is the master of surprise, never more so than with his Cloverfield franchise.

The original movie teased us with a cunning viral campaign, fake products and companies, and tantalising Easter eggs for the most dedicated fans to find. Meanwhile, 10 Cloverfield Lane, which originally had the working title 'Valencia', delivered us a trailer at the same time as announcing it was even a Cloverfield movie.

Cloverfield 3 has at least had the decency to tell us it exists. A movie formerly called The God Particle was revealed to be the next in Abrams' Cloververse back in October 2016, though since then we've hardly had any further details.

Now finally though, we have a few titbits.

First a rumoured possible title.

Screen Rant is reporting that a lighting artist called Rui Xu, who worked on Justice League among other projects, posted one of his credits on LinkedIn as Cloverfield Station. Slightly tenuous? Yes. Plausible? Also yes. Given the film is indeed set on a space station, it's entirely possible this is the title they'll go with.

What we know about Cloverfield 3 is that it's directed by Julius Onah and stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O'Dowd and David Oyelowo as astronauts stuck on a space station after an experiment involving a particle accelerator makes the Earth disappear.

Speaking to Collider, Brühl added a bit of detail to this.

"I went to UCLA and I met some very brilliant students and scientists there," he said of his research for the role. "It was only 2% of the information that I was given by them that I remotely understood.

"It's based on many interesting ideas about a near future scenario, which is an interesting vision of what could happen or what might happen with the Earth. I'm a bit scared to talk about it because it's so extremely secretive. I'm afraid of ending up in a Bad Robot prison."

Meanwhile, Film School Rejects reports that a bit of Easter eggy goodness has also arrived, via a website for a fictional mining company which exists within the Cloververse – Tagruato. On that site, there's a cryptic message spotted by someone on Reddit, which reads:

"Tokyo – January 18, 2018: Tagruato has begun development on a revolutionary new energy technology in what Ceo Garo Yoshida called a technological great leap forward for our planet. This renewable technology will take at least 4 years to complete along with another six years International regulatory bodies to bring the powerful revolutionary energy source by April 18, 2028."

Translate the date to a web address and you get 04182028.com where you can see and hear garbled sounds and images: "... put your hands where I can see them..." and "... warn you about the danger..." are two possible sentences – but we've no idea what that might mean.

Cloverfield 3 is due out on April 20, 2018 and it's possible that the movie will be set 20 years in the future and that this 'powerful revolutionary energy source' is part of the plot.

We've seen no footage and no imagery from the film as yet – it's possible a trailer might land during the Super Bowl on February 4 (a trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane debuted there).

Cloverfield 3 aka The God Particle aka Cloverfield Station opens on April 20.
