Coatbridge school pupils given invaluable insight into period awareness and management as part health week

Langloan Primary pupils were given invaluable insight into period awareness and management as part of the Coatbridge school’s health week.

Bloody Amazing, a leading social enterprise dedicated to menstrual health education, delivered menstrual cycle workshops to P6 and 7 girls as part of its new partnership with the school.

The workshops aimed to “foster a deeper understanding and comfort around menstrual health”.

Principal teacher Nicole Henderson said: “These workshops are essential in equipping our pupils with knowledge about their bodies.

“Jen [Nelson] creates a safe and supportive environment for pupils to discuss this topic openly with their peers.”

The interactive workshops covered a wide array of essential topics including the female reproductive system, medical terminology, hormone fluctuations, symptoms and pain management, and identifying potential period problems.

“The sessions also introduced reusable and sustainable period products, highlighting their benefits for personal health and the environment.

“In addition, the workshops emphasised self-care practices to support girls through their menstrual cycles.”

One Langloan Primary pupil who participated added: “I really enjoyed the workshops.

“I learned a lot about what happens in my body and I felt comfortable to talk about my experiences and ask questions.

“Jen made this experience fun and interactive which helped us all to learn. I think it’s really important for all pupils to learn about this.”

The participating girls formed a focus group with a mission to extend awareness throughout the school community.

This group will provide support to younger learners and work diligently to eliminate the shame and stigma often associated with periods.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Langloan Primary School in empowering young girls with knowledge and confidence about their menstrual health,” said Livvi Brooks, founder of Bloody Amazing.

Jen Nelson, who delivered the workshops, added: “These workshops are crucial in breaking down barriers and creating an open dialogue about periods, ensuring that young girls feel supported and informed.”

The initiative marks a significant step in Bloody Amazing’s ongoing efforts to promote menstrual health education and support across schools.

By equipping young girls with the knowledge and tools they need, Bloody Amazing and Langloan Primary School are helping to build “a more informed, confident, and stigma-free generation”.
